Christians sometimes find the doctrine of the Trinity hard to grasp. Over the past years, evangelical theologians have shown how difficult it can be as they debated the best language to use to describe this biblical doctrine.

That said, believers have had about 2,000 years to reflect on the Scriptural revelation of the triune God. As we read the Bible and think about these things, we should also take into account how God has led the church in its worship of God over the centuries.

Here are three books that will help you understand the Biblical doctrine of the Trinity as well as gain some insight into Christian worship over the centuries.

The Trinity by Scott Swain

I am recommending The Trinity by Scott Swain to anyone who wants to understand the Biblical doctrine of the Trinity because it’s (1) biblical, (2) well-written, and (3) only 133 pages (so accessible).

This is where you should start. Have a Bible beside you and read all the verses that Swain cites to really get a deeper understanding of this central biblical doctrine.

Delighting in the Trinity by Michael Reeves

Some years ago I read Michael Reeves’s Delighting in the Trinity, and it often comes up in the context of book on the Trinity. If I remember correctly, this work focuses on our delight in the Triune God. It also has snippets on church history.

The Trinity by Augustine

For some reason, we have convinced ourselves that we cannot read great books, those old, study works that have stood the test of time. But you can. Old books, classic books often are written in an understandable yet profound way. That’s one reason they gained classic status.
