God and Christ: The Apologetics of Tomorrow

I live in a neighbourhood where my neighbours are Hindu and Muslim. When I am at a bus stop, I can converse with Muslim legal scholars. When I walk by my neighbour’s house, I wave to Hindus. This is everyday life in modern Canada. As I reflect on my neighbourhood, I realize that my apologetic challenge comes from two directions: Muslims who assert that God is solitary rather than the triune God of Scripture, and Hindus who maintain that God is manifold (i.e., there are many gods) rather than the one God of Scripture. I find myself intellectually pressed between...

The Christmas Story Is a Story

My title sounds like something written by that famous government department, “The Department of Redundancy Department.” But unlike that fictional department, my title has a point, namely that despite the fact that many of us would like something stronger and better, we learn about the nativity of Jesus from two sources, Matthew and Luke, and both are told in story form. So, let’s break it down and think about the nativity story. First, It Is a Story. For many Canadians, both those who are Christians and those who are not, the whole category of “story” sounds weak, not very serious,...

The Simple Depth of Christmas

One of my favourite Christmas carols is “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” I have always enjoyed it, but last year, something happened that strengthened its place in my heart. Last Christmas, my church put on a community Christmas dinner. As part of the program, of course, we sang some Christmas carols. As you would expect, it was a lovely time. We all sat around our tables after dinner, singing these familiar hymns about Jesus. As we sang, one of my daughters, who was just shy of three years old at the time, came and snuggled up on my lap. Having...

The Joy of Christmas: Finding True Joy in Union with Christ

My youngest daughter loves Christmas. Of course, she loves it for the same reasons other kids her age do but there’s also a very specific reason: her middle name is “Joy.” She’s at that stage where she gets excited whenever she sees her name. She sees “Joy” everywhere during the advent season! I find myself having to remind her: “Sorry girl but these signs aren’t about you! They’re talking about the joy that Jesus brings to the world!” The joy of Christmas is about Jesus. And in the same region, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over...

How to Celebrate Christmas

The eighteenth century was, in my opinion, the golden-age of hymn-writing. A goodly number of our favourite Christmas hymns were written during this era. There is one hymn, however, written by a Norfolk Baptist minister by the name of Edward Trivett (1712‒1792) that is certainly not among contemporary favs. Trivett was possibly raised in the Norfolk Baptist church at Worstead, where he became the pastor in 1742, a pastorate that lasted for fifty years. Around 390 were baptized during that time and received into the church as members. And a dozen or so men were sent out from the church...
