The Word across Canada (October 6)

Every week we want to bring to your attention expository, Gospel-centred sermons from pastors across Canada. We hope that you become familiar with some of the faithful ministers of the word in our nation. We also hope that you will be edified on your daily commute or whenever you listen to these messages. We lastly hope that you learn about the churches where these pastors minister, so that you can easily find Gospel-centered, expository churches in your region.

Jeff Eastwood on John 17:1-5 (Charlottetown)

John 17 is one of the most precious passages in all of Scripture. As Jesus comes to the brink of the cross, He cries out to His Father, once again revealing the intimacy that exists in the Godhead and the desire for the replication of that intimacy in Christ’s disciples. This week, Pastor Jeff Eastwood looks at verses 1-5,

George Sinclair on Galatians 2:11-21 (Ottawa)

In Galatians 2:11-21, the apostle Peter acted hypocritically and separated himself from the pagans who had become Christians. The apostle Paul publicly calls Peter on this. But rather than explaining the evil of hypocrisy or prejudice, Paul uses the confrontation to explain the Gospel. We are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, and not by our moral and religious effort. By explaining the Gospel, he also cuts the roots of prejudice.

Rob Godard on “Trusting God: He is All Wise” (Surrey)

Joseph is one of the people in the Bible who had every right to feel oppressed by his brothers. His response is one that we can learn from, not only because it rested in the power of God. but also in the reality that His plan is always best (wisdom).  God knows every possible possibility (middle knowledge) and always chooses the best plan to accomplish His glory. You can trust Him no matter what. and be confident that His plan is best even if you are sold into slavery, falsely accused or feel forgotten. May this text remind us of the great WISDOM of God. and the privilege we have of rightly trusting Him!

Josh Tong on Luke 9:28-36 (King City)

The central question of the Gospel of Luke is, “Who is Jesus?” Up to this point in the Gospel, people have come up with all sorts of answers. Some said he was an ancient prophet. Others said he was a heretic who needed to be eliminated. Finally, in Chapter 9, Jesus himself answers the question, first with words, then with a display of his true glory. In this sermon, Pastor Josh teaches us about the significance of Jesus’ Transfiguration and shows us that, if we are to deny ourselves, take up our crosses daily, and follow Jesus, we need to know him as he truly is: the glorious, majestic, and powerful Son of God.

Paul Martin on Exodus 14:15–14:31 (Toronto)

When God told Israel to march into the Red Sea, He was commanding an act of faith. He knew that salvation lay on the other side, but all they could see was water. Coming to God through Christ is similar in many regards. We know what the promises say, but it is not until we step forward in faith that we will be truly saved.

Here is the sermon.

Paul Carter on Matthew 19:1-12: “Singleness And Celibacy” (Orillia)

This is the fourth message in a series called “Family Matters”. In this message Pastor Paul looks at Matthew 19:1-12 and 1 Corinthians 7:1-7 in order to consider what the Bible says about marriage, singleness and celibacy. The message also reflects upon why it is that God might give a person the gift of celibacy and how we as the church can support single and celibate people.
