A few years ago, I read Michael Reeves’ wonderful book Delighting in the Trinity. It was so beautifully written and clearly explained that I included it in a list of books that a number of people in my church read together during a year-long reading challenge. We read a lot of good books that year, and yet many said that Reeves’ book was their favourite.

If I would use one word to describe Reeves’ writing, it would be tender. It’s evident that he is a skilled theologian and teacher, and that he’s committed to the faithful protection and proclamation of sound doctrine. But when it comes to applying that doctrine, that’s when his writing shines.

He writes with an exceptional pastoral warmth and beauty, no doubt inspired by some of the Puritans who have shaped his life and thinking. He will feed your mind, but he will also tend your heart as he invites you to see how the timeless truths of the gospel comfort the weary soul that is burdened by the weight of sin.

That is what he does in his new book, Right with God. This is a very short book on the very important doctrine of justification. Reeves skillfully shows us how the Reformers’ rediscovery of justification by faith alone makes all the difference in how we view God, ourselves, and the relationship between us.

In this book, you will find a combination of church history, exposition, and pastoral application. It addresses important topics like the difference between justification and sanctification; union with Christ; double imputation; faith and works; assurance of salvation; and worship. These are weighty doctrines! And yet, I would not hesitate to recommend this book to someone who has very little theological knowledge.

Here are some of my favourite quotations:

“We try to dress ourselves before God in the fig leaves of our own righteousness, but he clothes us kindly and properly with the righteousness of Christ.”

“You cannot be clothed with the righteousness of Christ without being united with the Christ who will change you into his likeness.”

“The simple fact is, you will not love God unless you know he loves you first. You will not love him unless you can know a security to enjoy him in. Justification by faith alone must therefore be the very foundation stone of healthy Christian living.”

I encourage you to put this book in the hands of anyone who struggles with either understanding the doctrine of justification, or living in the freedom and comfort of that doctrine. Give it to a new believer. Have it ready as a resource during a new members’ class. Recommend it to the brother or sister who constantly struggles with guilt. May it help many to delight in the One who has made us right with God.
