George Sinclair on “The Great Exchange” from John 19:1–16a (Ottawa)

If your Jewish friend heard this text they would probably be upset. It is one of the primary texts used by Christians to justify anti-semitism, including the darkest parts of anti-semitism, the many pogroms that have taken place within Christendom. It has also been used by tyrants to justify their power. What does the Bible teach? When we listen to these words closely we will hear how the text in fact is very wise, and how it addresses one of humanity’s greatest needs.
