The Word across Canada (November 20)

Every week we want to bring to your attention expository, Gospel-centred sermons from pastors across Canada. We hope that you become familiar with some of the faithful ministers of the word in our nation. We also hope that you will be edified on your daily commute or whenever you listen to these messages. We lastly hope that you learn about the churches where these pastors minister, so that you can easily find Gospel-centered, expository churches in your region.

George Sinclair on Galatians 5:1 (Ottawa)

Canadians value freedom very highly. Many Canadians, maybe even most Canadians, view becoming a Christian as a journey from freedom to “less freedom”. They ask themselves, “what could ever lead someone to choose less freedom?”

Galatians 5:1 is a profound declaration of the Gospel and freedom. The average Canadian would like this verse if the word “Christ” was removed and it simply said “For Freedom we have been set free….”. Without “Christ” Canadians like the verse, with “Christ” Canadians find this verse problematic. In this sermon we reflect on the centrality of the person and work of Christ to deliver us from slavery so we are free.

Steve Kim preached on Exodus 16 (Toronto)

Like the Israelites, we can easily grumble when going through difficult seasons in life. But there is another path. Replace your grumbling with gratitude because God has a purpose for you, He is present with you, and He will provide for you.

Here is the sermon.

Josh Tong on Luke 10:25-42: “Becoming Good Samaritans” (King City)

What’s the famous parable of the Good Samaritan all about? Many rightly interpret this parable as exhorting us to show greater compassion to others regardless of their race, wealth, or religion, but they miss the central point of how we become such people. Join Pastor Josh as he answers this crucial question from Luke 10:25-42.

Rob Godard on Pursuing Holiness: I am Holy (Surrey)

Text for today’s sermon is 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”  A Scholar once commented on this verse: “There is no sentence more profound in the whole of Scripture; for this verse embraces the whole ground of the sinners reconciliation to God”.

This verse shows us that:

  1. Jesus knew no sin
  2. Jesus was made to be sin
  3. That believers are holy

The more we grow in holiness the more humble we become because we see how far we have to go. The more we see Jesus and cling to the cross, the more confidence we have in His presence.

Here are the video and audio recordings.

Paul Carter on Mark 8:34-38: “Take Up Your Cross” (Orillia)

In this message Pastor Paul explores the essential offence of Christianity and the cost of following Jesus. He examines the increasing irrationality of the prosperity Gospel and attractional church in light of these foundational claims.
